"A staff sergeant sent us this one from Iraq. He was doing a safety inspection and was checking the outlet where Marines were plugging in a microwave oven."

Here is the link to the picture.

It's a drill-bit stuck into the fuse holder of a 13-amp British plug (BS 1363 type) [Linked Image]

Just... YEOUCH.

It doesn't surprise me though, it works doesn't it [Linked Image]

I am not sure of the wiring arrangements in Iraq but I know that *somewhere* 13amp sockets and plugs are used without fuses, due to 10 amp breakers in the distribution board, had a bunch of the cords turn up while I was working for a university.

I guess when your daily life includes the threat of being blown up by insurgents, electrical safety doesn't bother you.

Interesting to see the 15amp roundpin right next to the 13 amp flat pin outlet though.

Could have been worse...looks like a 5.56 round would also be the "right" size...with a dramatic 'overload indication." BOOM!

5.56 go 'blap!' 81mm mortar go BOOM!
I blame the Drill Sergeant.

That one _hurts_! At least they could've taken something smaller and replaced the cover!

No, it's ok: the switch is in the off position. [Linked Image]

there are FAR safer ways of bypassing a BS1362 fuse than that [Linked Image]

Clearly these guys have not been trained in Britain, or they would know that the proper way to bypass a BS1362 fuse is to wrap kitchen foil around the old blown fuse. At least then you can get the cover on! [Linked Image]

Oh, let's not miss the really important violation here -- The cord grip is missing! [Linked Image]

My only explanation is they found the plug with the fuse already missing. Or they didn't have kitchen foil... btw, since that works with Diazed fuses too it's pretty international, though strands of copper were more common here. Back when receptacles still had built-in fuses kitchen foil was very common.
