ECN Forum
Hi
Anyone have any info on house wiring in Malta or Cyprus .
I am uk electrician, is there any standard circuits, like uk.
Looking to refurb a property in the above countries.
I.e. max length runs, etc.
Cheers
Jerry
Hi Jerry,
Welcome to ECN.
As I understand it Malta & Cyprus use British standard accessories and 240V 50Hz, just like us.
Logic would suggest that standard circuits follow UK practice and BS 7671.
There could be local variations, of course, it would be wise to check with the Maltese building authorities & electricity supplier for their requirements.
Hi
I came across the board by accident, it seems very informative.
Many thanks for the reply.
Cheers

For Malta, see the following document: http://www.mra.org.mt/Downloads/Legislations/Electricity_supply_regulations1999.pdf

If it doesn't answer your questions, try the standards organisation webpage www.msa.org.mt or e-mail them. I did on a different matter concerning electricity, and I did get a reply from this man francis.farrugia@msa.org.mt

They should at least be able to point you to the relevant standard. Just like David wrote, there is a good chance it is the British IEE regs.

For Cyprus: I've tried but failed to contact the standards organisation by e-mail on an earlier occasion. Thus, I can't help you. And that's the Greek part of the island. I think it will be even more difficult to find information on the Turkish part...

{Corrected to refer to David, not Paul. I apologize for the mistake}

Oh, as always: You need to have a local license. That much is crystal clear from the law I linked to above. I you don't have it, you need someone with a license who certifies the installation.

It even says that an electrician who is caught twice with certifiying faulty installations loses his license. [Linked Image]

Wonder if it's just a tough law or if they are tough in practice?
The Electricity Authority of Cyprus is found on the following Internet address:
http://www.eac.com.cy/

Informative site, although it does not answer your specific question. I suggest you e-mail them and ask.

Side note: Both Cyprus and Malta seems to be using 40A single phase, just like many other European countries.

Hi Jerry,

Allow me to welcome you to ECN.

I've never been to either Malta or Cyprus myself, but as the others have said, everything I've read refers to both using mostly BS fittings and British practices. THey may well have local variations though.

I don't know for sure, but I think some B and C vitamine should do well, given what I heard about Malta and Greece.

(B&C = Bribe and connections)
