It looks like part of this was the installer's plan from the beginning. The "main box" in this thing is an extension.
The front extension has been added later.

Take off another 6 points for the open KO in the bottom of the real box.

Is this a remodel. I have yet to see a remodel job where flex doesn't look terrible when done. Unless you are starting new, forget it. If you want nice you're gonna run the solid pipe stuff....what's that called? Oh yeah I remember, EMT/RNC/IMC conduit...RNC if you mean business.....

Good, Fast, or Cheap : Pick two and only two. How do you compete with someone that runs around installing this flexible junk vs. installing real conduit.

Unless the box fill has be violated I don't have an issue. It doesn't look nice but I can let that slide.

Unfortunately the workmanship part is the first thing to go when trying to meet budget. It's the one thing that is fuzzy as far as code goes. How many guys still paint the plywood board behind the load panel gray? I haven't seen it done in a LONG time. It looked nice but really it served no useful purpose.

This box would appear to have a history.

A trooper placed a 4-11 box with twin 1" KOs at all four sides with the intention of running a 1" EMT feed.

Subsequently that scheme was changed to twin 3/4" EMT ... line and load. A 4-11 TKO extension ring was used providing appropriate knockout options: MC & EMT.

1" KO seal wasn't at hand... overlooked in the crush of events.

Box fill may be okay as many wires probably route in and out without make-up.

Digging past these conductors is too much when stabbing in yet more lighting whips so a second 4-11 TKO ring was used.

Lighting whips in MC running under six feet are permitted to omit strapping rules if in an accessable ceiling space.

Say what ya want.But that is terrible.How do say not on my watch.Just me I try to never use the ko's in an extension ring.

A note about the connectors...

There actually exists an MC sonnector that looks, for all the world, like an ENT set-screw connector. Not until you remove the MC can you see the light metal piece within, thaat grips the MC.

As a side comment, if these are lighting whips, there sure must be a lot of light fixtures around this box.

I feel sorry for the person who troubleshoots the circuits in the original circuits in the box mounted to the wall.
