Crikey Kurt!.
That's not good at all, given the area that this area is often full of people.
And given the distance from the ground, means that any un-supervised child could "have a play" with the exposed wiring. [Linked Image]
I thought that these sorts of things were required to have a security screw arrangement on them?.
Or is a case of a slack workman leaving the cover off of it after repairs?.
I hope that this was immediately reported to the appropriate authorities.

I thought he was pointing out the jerk who parked over the line. [Linked Image]

But the exposed connections are bad too. [Linked Image]

No, I didn't push the wires back in, but not because it shouldn't have been done. First, I was just shopping there--I didn't exactly have jurisdiction to start tampering with their electrical system. Second, I would rather not be pushing (probably live) connections around without appropriate PPE, which I did not have at the time.

I am going to make sure to report it to the mall management, though.

The average joe on the street doesn't realize that 277v is the norm for a lot of parking lot lighting. It'll kill you quick. That's reeeally dangerous.

I'm wondering too if this is just something that was forgotten during the final stages of the electrical work. Is this a fairly new parking lot? The wires look 'new' and lack that overbaked 'I've been in the sun too long' effect.

I know people are curious but not curious enough to reach into a light pole and pull out a pile of wires. Teenagers are usually up to more interesting forms of destruction.

Just my guess, but this looks like it was pulled out intentionally, possibly for troubleshooting purposes.

It's a rarity to find individual photocells on poles any more, and almost unheard of in a mall. The conductors were likely not energized when this picture was taken, but would be energized at night when the lights were turned on.

Mike, you took the words right our of my mouth!

Crikey- a euphemism for 'Christ keep me'.
Blimey- a euphamism for 'God blind me'.
( The full expression being 'Gor Blimey'.)
Both used originally by the God fearing to avoid directly taking the Lord's name in vain, but without uttering actual expletives.

You could also try-
Fiddlesticks.

Blooming Ada, or my favourite,
