Maybe that is why some hairdryers are marked with the warning "do not use this appliance while sleeping."

I notice that the receptacle (waht's left) was at one time wrapped with black tape. For some reason, that always makes me suspicious of the workmanship/knowledge of the installer. I'm not saying that anyone who does this is incompetent, but the ratio is pretty high.

I think that you're likely to see more and more of these if things continue the way they are. I mean the increased usage through older circuitry. I suppose that AFCIs' should be stopping things like this from ocurring in the future bedroom circuits. I should have taken a picture of the burned panelling with the bed up against it (it was a kids' room too!)

I'm looking forward to the AFCI. It will likely save quite a few lives. It will also put some money in our pockets as many of us will be recommending the use of this type of protection in older homes. I know of two fires near my home that could have been prevented by the AFCI. Fortunately, they involved property damage only.

Did this recep burn up because of loose internal contacts or loose screw connections? In older wiring, I've come across a lot of loose screw terminals & I wonder if they got loose over a period of time due to thermal cycling, vibration, poor materials or were there that many loose connections to begin with?
