New HID lighting to be installed for this local government gas station. Light fixtures will be installed 12 feet above ground. EMT will be the wiring method used. As I interpret Article 514, I find it to be an approved wiring method for above Class 1, Division 1 location.


Does anybody disagree?

i'm not going to disagree, but i would like to ask...
511-6(a) what do you think is meant by 'above', above the pumps to the canopy only, or above the canopy also?
( seen a few canopies with satallite 'credit-card' dish's)

12', no aurgement...the totally enclosed part get's me. I was on a crew that supposively installed those totally enclosed 1000 W metal halides. I think they had a gasket the cover met up with.

this was at a 24 hr gas station

some time later (years) the local fire dept had a call to extinguish one. being that nothing seems totally enclosed to flys, they enetered , died & dried out in enough numbers to create a 'fly-fire'
(the engine in the pix reminded me..)

i've been curiuos if listings addressed wee beasties ever since.....

My Opinion is up to canopy. Above the canopy should be considered un classified and not subjected to Article 514, or 511.

Totally enclosed as it relates to light fixtures protects against falling sparks to the Class 1, Division 1 area in the event of a short circuit etc.

i would guess your opinion is the conclusion of many as that seems the norm.

how do you veiw the canopy poles used for conductors? most i've worked had a handhole,in which we tried to land the first seal....

I've never personally used the canopy poles to house conductors. I suppose the most important thing would be placing the conduit seals in the proper location.

of curiosity is the dry chemical extiguisher's placed on the canopy top, there's usually 4 or more ports under the canopy, depends on # of pumps.
This is sort of like the resuarant ansul system. It's considered fire suppression, not detection. that one key term means it can be apparently installed without any means of circuit monitoring ( trouble on open circuit), even though the station may be an eat-and-get-gas fully fire alarmed deal.

Not required for this particular application.

Sparky's "fly fire" gives new depth and meaning to the term "bug light".
