Whatever that is in the upper right corner looks pretty interesting.

Anybody got any Ideas on what that is? [Linked Image]

Definetly the work of a home owner, Wiring not supported, jacketing has been removed.and romex runs in front of the fixture. the right corner looks like someone tried to slip wires thru a small hole by removing the protective jackets

Edmond,

Hello! Well, we're not here to bash the Homeowner as some can be quite capable. But it is not the work of a Professional by any definition. [Linked Image]

It's the work of terrorists, the bulb's filled with gasoline.....call the swat team!

Or, it's the work of the Anti-Electricians!! [love that message, Sparky!!].

Bill;

I think I can see where you are going with the question about the upper right corner.
In other words, I can smell the Insulation burning from here !!!

Sure is an elaborate installation, though. I see 3 wiring methods at that 4/0 box. The little flex stub, the Romex and what appears to be an orange extention cord.

I feel sorry for the poor fixture and motion detector! [Linked Image] Looks like the plywood is the next thing to feel sorry for [when it begins to glow and smoke ~:-O].

Looks like the unit was removed from a previous installation, nailed to the joist and connected to the romex - free air splice I guess you might call it. Almost looks like that upper nail goes right through the romex doesn't it? Guess they had to secure it within 12" of the box somehow. Do have to wonder what they have hanging from the lampholder by that wire - side of beef??
