Here are some pics I took of all the scary wiring in a gym I am working in. I installed a card lock system for the front door.

I also found some knob and tube wiring in the basement which he gave to me. Enjoy the pics everyone.

Love all the open wiring and coverless boxes right in public reach at the entrance!! (Pics 4 & 5)

Please tell me that the submitter didn't install that transformer....

Maybe instead of a card reader, he should've put in a fire alarm!! [Linked Image]

This is the biggest bunch of DIY electrical work I've seen in awhile. Maybe you should explain that there's a reason why you (as one who does electrical work) don't operate a gym, and gym owners shouldn't do electrical work.

I've seen old meters a few times before, but this is interesting - having the meter leads in free air down to a conduit body with a special lid.

Is any of that K&T still in use?
Posted By: Rewired Re: Scary Gym Wiring - 01/21/06 03:49 AM
This is in Canada is it not?? the bottles of " Unival" gas line antifreeze and the FPE panel cover kinda suggest "canadian issue" [Linked Image] ( That and the meter being C.G.E)

And still, people wonder how electrical fires start...
Posted By: Wizzie Electric Re: Scary Gym Wiring - 01/21/06 03:25 PM
-No I didn't install the transformer.
-no the K&T isn't in use any more.
-Yes its in canada.

In pic 11 the silver wire coming from the box has a metal sheathing. weird stuff.

ps. most of the wiring was like this when the owner bought the place. it used to be a furniture store.

almost forgot to ask, were the knobs & cut off fixture naturally brown? or is that something else?
Posted By: mamills Re: Scary Gym Wiring - 01/21/06 10:18 PM
The brown color seems to suggest a previous fire in this area - not a real big surprise [Linked Image].

I have seen only one or two of those "A" meters with wiring feeding into a unilet fitting like this. Mostly, they are installed with the terminal area protruding into the top of a service switch of some type.

I'm guessing that the device to the right is a fused main disco with one of those old "rotor" contact disks. This old service really doesn't look too bad (for its age)- its all the ugly stuff that's been cobbled onto it over the years that's disturbing.

Are you doing any more work for them (I hope), other than the card reader?

I might be bringing the wiring up to code and date.
Posted By: mamills Re: Scary Gym Wiring - 01/24/06 12:38 AM
Wizzie: If that's the case, it looks like you have quite a bit of work to do here [Linked Image].

I haven't had to go shopping for "handy boxes" for a while. Those boxes in the pix seem wider than what I'm used to seeing. is that a local Canadian manufacture, or are all handy boxes being made larger now?

Our handi-boxes are slightly narrower. Might have to bring some of those down from Canada next time I'm up north.

In pic 4, is that a 15A switch carrying 240, or is the outlet only supplying 120? looks like a 220 to me
Posted By: Wizzie Electric Re: Scary Gym Wiring - 01/24/06 05:44 PM
I have no idea whats going on in those boxes Hemingray, but i think the 220 recept is for A/C I wouldn,t think it is switched. wouldn't this be in violation of voltage seperation.

oh in the fourth pic the double gang box is so full there is a half inch gap between the cover and the box.

I'll bet money on that switch carrying 240v or so for that outlet. (or the outlet only supplying 120v) I don't see any other EMT or wiring runs to that outlet other than from that switchbox below.

Sorry Hemingray you where right. I looked last night when i was there and one leg of the 220 is switched. And i also put covers on all those boxes. [Linked Image]

It looked like it. lol [Linked Image] That sort of mess I would have immediately yanked out. I can see it being led from the 2 gang switchbox below..
