The working space clearance to show complianace with Table 110.26 starts from the face of the meter.

This space is inadequate and violates the code!!

Zero Lot Lines ?

Dosen't look like the large switch door will open 90ยบ either.

Which premise is "at fault" ?

We have 1 real similar to this in Conroe,Texas. But the building belongs to the mayor so apparently it is code compliant [Linked Image]

Joe:
Take that same type of alley, and put the left buildings service drop & meter there; along with the right buildings.
(It's in NJ, and the utility apparently "OK'd" it.)

I believe the local AHJ (not me) gave a "variance", as it's an old neighborhood
and the lots are tight.

Another situation .... when standing in front of these disconnects what standing postion is the recommended practice?

To the left, or to the right, right handed or left handed?

In many cases the clearances for the handle are not even enough for a hand to grasp the handle so it can be operated!

Joe: I hate to differ with you, but 110.26(A)(1)says the depth of the working space is measured from the face of the enclosure,, not the face of the meter. Creighton
Hello Creighton:

You are correct. I was stretching the point while reading the first words in the definition of "Enclosure" in Article 100 .......

Quote
Enclosure. The case or housing of apparatus, or .....

I personally believe that the face of the meter itself does entroach into the working space.

The meter reader will have to slide by the space in the front of the glass to stand in front of it to read the meter, and some meter readers may even touch the glass with their nose if they are a size 36 like I am...

Even with my bifocals I couldn't stand that close to that equipment and read the nameplate data much less do any work.

Just think -- an electrical arc blast reaches 35,000 degrees F and standing in front of that equipment you become the middle of the sandwich!
something like this what i genrall do is stay on the right side of disconnet switch and use my left hand to oprate and face away from door and forewarn any one near the area to say "engerizeing box " or juice on soon "

but few other may have diffren way please do let us know i hope i can find a better and safer way with the encloseres boxes

merci marc

I don't believe there is a safe way to operate the switch here as one has to be almost on top of it in order to operate it!
