Picture speaks for itself! Found this one on the Coast of Oregon ...note
the corrosion on the cover. Apparently the cover mounting screws corroded
off and a creative way was found to keep the cover (sort of) mounted on the
box. The extension cord left this box and was then buried on it's way to
another building across a parking lot.

That cord cap looks like the Chinese-made General Electric ones sold in places like K-Mart and Wal-Mart.

They're nasty suckers...my experience with one of them has been that the screws holding the dead-front and the rubber husk together don't tighten and grip properly and eventually they will separate, leaving the chunk of plastic with the pins stuck in the socket when you go to pull it out of the socket.

I don't know how they got the UL listing (there have been instances of Chinese manufacturers couterfeiting the UL seals, which is why now UL requires that hologram foil label on any electric stuff coming from China). [Linked Image]

Also the strain relief clamp doesn't grip the cord jacket properly...and if you tighten those screws too much they will strip.

Urgh!
(All hairs curling, shivers going down my back)
This is international, and it doesn't take 20 years of training to recognize the hazards!

The only thing to say about that is, oh god not again,
Painful as it might be this is what we are here for.

that is why we do what we do, and we do it good.

I am just pleased that i dont have to remove the plug from that socket,,,,,,,,,ouch!!

For the price of a Mcdonalds lunch he could have replced the rec. and the cover plate. I usually find them with a $4 tube of silicone plastered all the way around. Cover plate $2.89 + duplex rec. $.49 , whats the logic?????????

I've seen that before.... I've even saved a piece of decomposed extension cord to show people that it will not withstand prolonged burial.
Now that Ideal is selling a UF stripper, perhaps we'll see less of this, though I'd much prefer pipe....even if the pipe isn't buried as deep as it should be.

I wonder if the interior of the receptacle, as well as the wiring connected to it, are as badly deteriorated as the cover and box.

Could someone identify what type of box this might be?

TERRIBLE! [Linked Image]

Mike, it appears to be a standard "bell" box that has been recessed into the fence post or siding or whatever that is.

And yes, with a gap that large and salt air, you can bet the wiring is badly decomposed.

Ignorance is bliss?
