APPROVAL OF EQUIPMENT FOR AMMONIA REFRIGERATION

Some ammonia refrigeration rooms are classified as non hazardous. These may
be in ice rinks or large food processing plants etc.

Memo 18-24-96 gives some advice, but it is not clear that some ammonia rooms
are hazardous and some are not.

If MCCR classifies an ammonia room as a "Class T Machinery Room" then the
room is non-hazardous.

If MCCR classifies it as a "Machinery Room", then it is hazardous location,
Class 1 Division 2.

This follows the CSA specification B52, Mechanical Refrigeration Code used
by the MCCR for Pressure Vessels.
What is the MCCR? and Why would one room be classified as Class T Machinerey Room and the other be classified as a Machinery Room? I worked on an amonia refrigeration for a food shipping and recieving company, and it was all done as a non-hazardous location.
