Since tax time is coming near, most of us are getting all our books in order so we can visit our accountant. Since the information is handy, now is the time to review your overhead figures (or have your accountant do it) so that you can determine how much markup you really need just to cover your overhead.

Just for grins, before you crunch the numbers, write down your guess as to what the highest overhead item is for your business.

I'm betting on "free estimates" for my business, probably followed by insurance.

Happy New Year to all

For my company I am the largest overhead expense, followed by my office manager, followed closely by advertising.

Tom, I'd probably second that guess but I'm afraid to assign a number to those lost hours 'n more hours.

#1 is time spent at ECN.
#2 is voluntary and unvoluntary time spent talking with salespeople.
#3 is time spent reading books about ways to improve my business.
#4 is estimating.
#5 is salary and benefits!

Just guessing, really.

I’m flummoxed. I always thought markup used red pencil for the old, and green for the new. …talking about as-builts, right? ;-]
