So when the 2005 hits the streets, is everyone on this forums going to start batting it back and forth? And, say adios to the 2002?

I probably won't get a 2005, as I won't have a need for it, as it may, or may not be adopted here. For instance, we were on the '93 until 2001 and 1/2, and adopted the '99!

The 2005 National Electrical CodeĀ® is already on the streets and being sold at the IAEI Section Meetings. It will be adopted in most areas by May or June of 2005, why wouldn't we start using it for discussion? [Linked Image]

I got my NEC at the NW section, which was on Monday.

Funny story...the IAEI had the analysis book as well as the NEC. In the booth next to them was the NFPA......they didn't have their NEC's available yet!!!

You should have seen the embarrasment that Mark Early had when he saw this! [Linked Image]

Ryan, I like Mark Earley and I would bet that you were not reading him right. The IAEI is the host of the section meeting, not the NFPA. I am guessing that the NFPA did not have the NEC for sale as a courtesy to the IAEI. [Linked Image]

Ryan,

Did these '05 NECs have the IAEI Logo on them?

If so, maybe NFPA pushed them out first, I haven't seen a 'generic' 2005 NEC yet.

Yes Bill, they did. [Linked Image]

Is IAEI giving us a free one this year?
Posted By: CharlieE Re: 2005 NEC and this forum? - 09/17/04 05:31 PM
You "earn" 1/3 the points required for a free copy per year if you are willing to pay for the shipping. If you have been a member for the previous cycle, you will get a free copy this cycle. I assume that has not changed. [Linked Image]

I know the old rules, I just didn't see any reference in my renewal statement.
Posted By: Bill Addiss Re: 2005 NEC and this forum? - 09/17/04 06:07 PM
FYI:
If anyone is eligible you have to make sure that you request your copy. I missed out last cycle, they ran out of Books and allowed no substitutions.

I think I am going to sit on my $90 check until I can sort this one out.

I guess that is why they have the box "why are you not renewing your membership".

I often wonder where all that money goes. It sure doesn't cost them $15 a copy for the magazine.

It goes to support two representatives on each Code Making Panel, to pay for representatives to go to the various chapter meetings, developing training materials, pay for the office staff's salaries, pay for the international headquarters offices, and the list goes on. If you are not involved in the IAEI and taking advantage of their functions, you are right . . . the magazine is not worth the price. On the other hand, if you look at the good they do for safety, the betterment of the Code, and training they do, it is well worth the price.

They tout themselves as the keystone of the electrical industry and I believe they are right. A man is a fool to believe he can be perfect. Everyone needs a well trained inspector to look over his work and literally save lives.

Sorry, I got a little carried away but I feel strongly about this subject. [Linked Image]

Your comment is well said. For anyone who does not go to local chapter meetings, or the section meetings, it is hard to see the value of the membership.

Remember the $90 membership, is a membership fee, not a fee for the book.
Your membership to the IAEI validates what they are doing, it gives the IAEI 'clout' to shape our industry, and it helps the industry as a whole to provide all of us with a better understanding of the industry.

My town is still on the '96 NEC. The neighboring towns are '99 and '02.

I'm sure some "progressive community" will adopt the '95, and make me spend the $$$ again [Linked Image]

Ryan or others who might have seen an 05 NEC by now - I'm hoping you can help me with a question on AFCIs. I realize there was a floor vote in Utah to override the panel decision and require AFCIs for all "living area" circuits. Did that action stay in effect and make it into the code? I would sure appreciate knowing - I have a seminar on these things scheduled for Tuesday morning the 21st.

Thanks

Oops - never mind. I was able to find the answer in one of the other links posted by Joe Tedesco. Looks like the Standards Council re-affirmed the CMP and did not uphold the floor vote. AFCIs still just for bedroom circuits.

I don't mind sending them $90 a year if they are really helping the industry. I just don't want to see those guys buying yachts

So what states are adopting it, and when?
Posted By: Ryan_J Re: 2005 NEC and this forum? - 09/21/04 01:24 PM
We will adopt it January 1 of 2006, but I start teaching on it next month.

My IAEI copy of the 2005 NEC just arrived today.

I recommend that questions about the 2005 NEC be clearly identified as such. Putting 2005 in the Topic title is probably the best way to go.

The situation with so many areas of the country refering to different code cycle years is very frustrating. As such, NY State is not refering to the '05 NEC until 2009.
I can see how this is going to cause great confusion. We are refering to the '99 until 2005.

How will these new requirements affect people still on the 'old' code?

1. GFCI protection of vending machines
2. GFCI protection of receptacles within 6 feet of utility sinks.
3. Bonding grid around pools that have no metallic parts.
Some new Articles, etc...

We used to have code cycle seminars and sell both the NEC and the Analysis books, drawing approximately 500 people. This year we have no takers!!!!

Pierre,

We'll be having a Seminar in Nov. hosted by our local Contractor's Association. It will be interesting to see what it will be on. Last I heard it will likely be some combination of the 2002 and 2005 NEC plus NYS Building and Residential codes.

I live and work in New York state, and work in a meat processing plant as an industrial and maintenance technician. I just ordered my first NEC handbook (2005).

Should I have ordered the '99?
Or the '02?
Will the '05 NEC have specs in it that would not be legal by the '99 NEC or the '02 NEC?
Posted By: e57 Re: 2005 NEC and this forum? - 10/16/04 06:38 AM
Of course, but maybe only 1% of the book. That 1% may be the item that fails you though.
Posted By: Dave55 Re: 2005 NEC and this forum? - 10/16/04 01:57 PM
The first NEC I studied and tested for was the 1993 NEC. At that time Crystal Lake was using the 1984 NEC. They are now on the 1999 NEC. McHenry County (which Crystal Lake is in) is on the 2002 NEC and seems to adopt the most recent NEC not too long after it's out.

I buy the most recent edition and use it to guide my installations.

Greg,

I re-up with the IAEI and before I was able to send in my money another letter came in stating that I could get the nec NEC for free. ( except for S&H ). So I just sent 2 checks ( and I ordered the tabs) and I got my new book already.
Posted By: gfretwell Re: 2005 NEC and this forum? - 10/20/04 03:08 AM
I got mine too. I have never bought the tabs. I marked up and tabbed my 90 book before I did my first round of IAEI tests (2ABC) back in the SS days. When I did the SBCCI battery I only tabbed a few places and used colored markers on some pages.
Since then I can pretty much "cut the deck" within a few pages of where I am going. The tabs just slow me down.
I am getting pretty lazy when I am home because I have the handbook and code on a CD.
