I need to install a hot tub in a gazebo type building that is totally enclosed. Is this considered an indoor installation? The walls are all closer than 5-feet, so where could the receptacle go?

This brings up a question in general. Is there a definition of exactly what would be considered indoor vs. outdoor?

hi,
this is an indoor location but considered in a damp location. You still need GFCI protection for any convenience outlets, insta-hots or pumps.

I do not know what type of hot tub you are planning to install but it must have the disconnect within sight. If this receptacle your talking about is supplying power to the tub and you are using a cord to connect the tub then consider a receptacle with an in use cover. If your hardwiring the tub, use a switch on the wall that controls the gfi for the hot tub as the disconnect. Be sure to bond the housing of the motor to any copper lines and be sure it is #8 or better.

This is a hardwired hot tub. The problem is, 680.43 requires a receptacle between 5-10 feet from the hot tub, but all of the walls are less than 5 feet away. I don't see any exceptions to locate the receptacle less than 5 feet from the hot tub.

you say the walls are a little less than 5 feet away from the inside wall of the tub right? I am sure that if you were to use a gfi outlet with a cover on it the inspector would pass it, if he doesn't ask him what his opinion would be.

I've done this before. I had to trench 20 feet to the gazeebo. I put the disconnect at the house before I went in the ground. Although it was outside the structure that enclosed the hot tub it was still considered "within sight". At the gazeebo I came up the slab and LB'ed into the structure and installed a 3R jbox. From there I ran NMFC to the spa.
