How many of you guys would install GFCI protection for a hard-wired 240 pump motor for in in-ground pool?
I bought a 20-amp 240-volt GFCI breaker for $120.00, and although I am not required to GFCI-protect the pump because it is not fed by a receptacle, I still did.

Money well spent?, or money wasted?

Doesn't a motor shorten the life of the protecter(GFCI)?

In our area of North Carolina we are required to install GFCI protection for pool pumps, regardless whether plug-in or hardwired.

I submitted a proposal for the 2005 NEC to require GFCI protection for all Residential Pool Pumps regardless (or irregardless?) of how they were connected. My reasoning was that many times these pumps are disconnected and reconnected (Season closings, openings & servicing, etc) by less than qualified people and sooner or later will become a hazard. It was shot down.

I've done quite a bit of service work on pools and did referral work from several companies. You'd be surprised what the Owner (or sometimes the 'Pool Guy') will do.

I submitted a similar rop also Bill...if only for some rationale, which turned out to be inconclusive.

I also supplied gfi protection for a 3-ph pool motor this year , you may remember the thread...

There would seem to be the bonding camp, as well as the 4-6 ma camp that do not see eye to eye on the issue...
