I work in a factory. The plant uses a lot of manufactured industrial cable assemblies (multi-conductor, flexible cables with MTW outer jacket insulation, usually run in cable tray, with the screw-on, quick-disconnect, male or female pin-connectors on each end). We had a 15hp, 3 ph, 480 volt motor fed from the starter with one of these 50 foot, 6-pin cable assemblies. The receptacle connector at the motor disconnect failed(burned up). We did not have the spare parts to repair it so we cut off the quick-disconnect screw-on plug and hard wired the cable conductors to the motor disconnect. We had to get the machine running. We found inside the cable a green #4 wire was used as one of the 480v power conductors and a red #4 wire was the ground (after we blew some fuses). Even though these power conductors were internal to the cable assembly and probably should never be accessed....this has got to be a code violation!? Am I right or wrong? Any comments would be appreciated.
