Ok for some reason or another I have always used twist lock plugs for my 208 voltages, all the restaurant equipment I've installed has been twist lock as well (maybe why I order TL) anyway a compressor ordered by customer has a straight blade nema 6-20P which I hooked up, just curious if anybody else has used straight blades as well or if they would change plug to twist lock?

Basically, as an EC I installed the receptacles that were spec's on the plans, or matched to the clients equipment.

As to 'changing' the plug on a factory cord, that was considered a "No-No", as it modified a UL/CSA/RTL listing.
Is that written in stone? Depends on how the AHJ reads the UL White Book.

Changing to a different plug, one that is also designated for the same use? Why on earth would anyone have an issue with that?

Or, for that matter, any other type of connection? There's no requirement to use a NEMA pattern plug.

"Altering" the product? Might as well just leave it in the box. Can't be too safe!

We can carry this 'listing and labeling' silliness too far. I recall one time when someone got all upset when a 'flammables' cabinet was painted to match the other cabinets and equipment in a workshop. "They HAVE to be yellow," it was asserted- despite being shown catalogs with such cabinets in yellow, red, orange, white, black, and grey, as well as brushed stainless. Made me want to paint the thing pink, with purple polka-dots, just to stir the pot!

Likewise, we've had discussions here as to whether it's allowed to actually use the new CFL and LED bulbs- after all, the fixtures were never evaluated for use with them.

Makes me wonder if it's OK to play porn films in my DVD player ... I mean, did UL 'evaluate' the player for use with porno films?

We got into this cord and plug thing with IBM. The story was that it was a listing violation to change a plug on a listed cord assembly. The machine was evaluated with that assembly.
They made a big deal about it but they still had the cord caps in the parts catalog.
We did have the whole cord assemblies too, with various caps on it.
The cord cap police is OSHA.

It also comes up on the filter motor for above ground pools.

I can speak from recent experience that a 5-30P and an L5-30P are dramatically different in price. Twist Lock is apparently much more popular in these parts for anything over 120 volts or 20 amps. I paid about five times the cost for a 30 amp straight-blade plug rated for 125 volts.

Given that, I would also probably convert to twist Lock in such instances.
