okay i give up...i know that somewhere it's in the nec, but i don't know where to find the article that tells us that dead wiring must be removed, or safed off properly. i'm fighting with an owens corning basement finishing contractor about having dead ckts. behind the walls.

Lots of luck finding it! While there are secions dealing with abandoned phone, data, and cable TV wires.... the NEC is silent on power wires!

I don't like it, but there it is.

after much searching i found the article in the nj fire code...we (electrical) are responsible for enforcing parts of other subcodes here in nj. the fire official stered me to the right article in his code.

I have had inspectors make us remove unused wires, but never if they were behind finished walls. Or are you saying they had the chance to remove them before the walls were covered?

on the rough i found the cables and j boxes behind studs set off 6" from the basement walls, they were live at the time of the rough. i explained to the contractor that they were to be removed..he did not comply, he said that the "owens-corning" system was "accessible"....and the rest is history

Take out the old stuff,, as per 110.3(A)(8)!

I hope you kidding 'barf'.

110.3(A)(8) is not a blanket requirement to pull out old wiring.

Quote
110.3 Examination, Identification, Installation, and Use of Equipment.

(A) Examination. In judging equipment, considerations such as the following shall be evaluated:

(8) Other factors that contribute to the practical safeguarding of persons using or likely to come in contact with the equipment

As a matter of fact 110.3(A) is about installation and use of equipment.

Abandoned equipment is not being used or installed.
