I'm not at all sure that this wording in the code was deliberate. I agree, technically re-identifying a wire to make it white is not allowed.

Personally, I disagree with this rule. Argument aside, not a single supply house here carries #6 or #8 wire in any color but black. Ironically, sometimes the box dtores do!

Frankly, I am simply delighted when ANY attempt is made to properly identify conductors.

Amen to any attempt to identify the conductors. It seems to be too much trouble to go the extra foot to properly identify conductors when their purpose is not clearly demonstrated or seen.

I think the box stores carry colors because a homeowner is more likely to buy cut wire in these sizes. They also need the help to avoid confusion. Although I have seen pros who should know better get wires misidentified.

Simple personal opinion is it wouldn't be a bad idea to change the minimum size allowed to number 8. #10 and below is pretty common stuff on the shelves. The rule apears to have been written with big shops in mind. The ones that will carry lots of inventory. Time for an old quote from the past " Its the economy stupid"

I would be more inclined to believe it is the wire mfg that drive these types pf code issues, if all the mfg stopped making white insulation for 8AWG and 6AWG the languge would change.

You can get white up to at least 500kcmil. There have been proposals to require the use of white insulation for all sizes of grounded conductors. These proposals along with the ones to permit re-identification of smaller conductors have been soundly rejected by the code making panel.
