I was wondering what the average distance between electrical outlets in a home are. In a room what is there an optimal distance between outlets? I'm a student and doing a study for the Rhode Island School of Design and would appreciate any help. I have done some research already and found some information suggesting that there should be no points along the floor that is more than 6ft from an outlet. Is that at all correct? Thank you.

Every 12' along a wall. An outlet is required on any wall over 2' long. On kitchen counter tops they are required every 4' on any kitchen counter top longer than 1'. This is only the minimum requirement, you can put one on every stud if you want to.

If you are really looking at "design" you pretty much have to visualize various furniture placements. Figure out where the tables or other places where lamps and equipment will be and making sure you have power there. The "6 foot" rule is just what the code requires.
