I had a customer, a restaurant, that decided to do a little expansion after the inspections were completed.

This pic shows the shed they made, which (in part) rested atop their walk-in cooler, completely buried the switchgear, and also blocked all vents to the water heaters:

Here's an inside view. The switchgear -supposed to be accessible to the outside - isn't even accessible inside the shed. The cabinet you see a bit of on the right encloses the water heater. Note the framing; the block wall will give you some idea of the spacing for those hefty 2x4 rafters:

Finally, here's a pic after the inspector returned:

The sad part is that these folks ... there is a language barrier ... have no understanding of what they did wrong. Failure to get a permit is the least of their construction sins!

I wonder if they understand the health codes.

Good question.

In all fairness to these folks, they do seem to know the food business.

If they have a failing, it is one shared by many others. It's the 'I'm smart, I know one trade ... therefore I can do other folks' jobs too" mindset.

I had the pleasure of doing the original electric on this place myself. I have also posted many, many pics here of electrical work they decided to do themselves.

So what's a guy to do? Well, I hit upon the idea of bringing every inspector from within 75 miles here for lunch ... as part of the monthly IAEI meeting laugh The look on the face of the GC as a parade of government cars entered the lot was priceless laugh

For some reason, that particular GC suddenly developed some respect for his electrician.
Even the customer still likes me, because my stuff works. (The plumber needed over a year to make a new toilet stop leaking frown )

I have seen two other restaurants do the same thing,,,jack leg sheds.....

Restaurants lead the list of commercial users with questionable electrical systems. Once completed and inspected they seem to hire the lowest quality electricians, never do maintenance, and just add, add, add.

How about the poor guy who signed off the crane inspection in NY without getting out of his truck?
This guy might do time
