Apparently, they can develop an open connection internally, which can result in a no voltage indication on a live circuit.

I bought my Fluke 75 DMM about 20 years ago.It is still going strong but every 5 years or so I had to buy replacement test leads for it for the very same reason. wow it took this long to figure out that problem and I could have had free replacement leads. Believe me these were hard to find here as we did not always have a fluke distrubter around over the years.
