Thanks Steve.
I'd never heard of 'Candlepin Bowling' till your first post, it looks great fun. We had a poor relation to this in England called 'Skittles'. Using only 9 pins, rough turned in a squatter barrel-shape and with similar smaller-sized wooden balls, 5"-6" diameter. Same scoring system, but times 9 of course, all chalked up on a blackboard. Not mechanised, and at church fetes/ agricultural fairs and stuff in the fifties we often played highest score of the afternoon won a weaner pig!
Fortunately, I never staggered home to Ma with a pig under my arm as a spotty youth. I dread to think what the reaction would have been-

Ma; "Where the Dickens did you find THAT filthy disgusting animal!!?? "

Pig; "A-hem. He won me at Skittles, ma'am!"
