I was reading the local paper today some article about court reporters. Nothing special until I read the last sentance:

"Court reporters in Cook County, in a few weeks, will be voting on possibly joining the Illinois Brotherhood of Electrical Workers."

I found it online also here: http://www.suburbanchicagonews.com/newssun/top/w25courtrep.htm

But then I thought wait.. There's a IBEW but it's International not Illinois. Never herd of or could find anything on Illinois Brother of Electrical Workers.

Did they get the Illinois part wrong or just did not even come close to naming the right union.

Not wanting any debates but I about fell off my chair when I read this.

I'm thinking the last time I was in court they had a few bulbs that needed changing. Maybe the court reporters could put on a tool belt a get to work during breaks.

I don't have any light to shed on that particular datum. However, having been involved in a major media circus a few years ago, my experience was that approximately 50% of what appeared in print was in fact wrong. (Interestingly, The Economist, which is supposed to be one of the world's top publications, was the one that was absolutely the worst--the story would have been totally unrecognizable had it not been for the names.)

I saw a tv report yesterday on Heat Pumps for 'Saving the Planet', on a national UK TV news channel. What a hoot! The dumbed down graphic showed cold water, ( blue, of course!), entering a box. Then, says the reporter, "We add the magic of electricity!"
A series of yellow 'lightning-flashes' is then shown hitting the box, and out pours "hot water for the heating circuit!"
( In red, of course! ). No compressor, no motor, no evaporator, no heat exchangers, no reservoir, no circulators, no capilliary tube, no thermostats, and,... no wiring!
I hope they got a patent application in first, this could prove revolutionary!

"I hope the court reporters get struck down, or fired...

We can't have the court systems being held hostage, it can't happen....."

I didn't read that in either article.
All I read is their trying to organize.

Hmmm... Cook County. Does that mean that court transcripts will have to be in conduit?

FYI,
if you play the horses in Illinois, the folks who take your bets at the track, are also members of LU134.........:> )

Deep in the bowels of the printing press basement is the staff who works for dirt cheap wages. Guess where they come from, and why the words are often spelled wrong.

If the court baliff can be a member of the Teamsters- why can't the reporter be an IBEW member?

It would make more sense if all Law and court people would be under the casino workers union...

You end up tossing the dice in our court systems the way it is now.........

Solar,

The transcripts in pipe? My guess is in a pleumn rated box. Can't allow burning paper fumes in a fire to get in the HVAC system.
