I asked one of the journeymen today about a transformer feeding a subpanel in an industrial facility we were working in.
His reply was that he didn't really know too much about transformers and that was one thing he really needed to learn more about.
Basically what I need to know is how can someone hold a license without knowing much about transformers? Seems pretty strange to me. Don't get me wrong...that guy does excellent work(keep in mind i am a second year apprentice so my opinion is obviously in question).
Anyway...where can I find a good resource on transformers?

Take a look at the talley plate on the transformer. It will tell you what the rating (kVA) is, voltages, etc. It will also tell you what type it is. Look at the diagram. Then tap the type of transformer into the internet and all kinds of stuff should pop up. Maybe the guy just didn't feel like giving you info on it. I would find it very hard to believe that an electrician wouldn't know BASICS of transformers. If I were you I would find out as much as you can.

Answer to your first question..you don't use it, you loose it....

Some guys have nothing to do with them, they studied to get their license, and forgot about them, because they don't see, or work with them.

Ask most Resi guys around me about a transformer, and they will likely think your talking about a doorbell transformer.

Do a search on this site, there is some great info available here. And ask some questions if you want, most guys here will be happy to help out....
The technical area has great drawings avail for your viewing...

Dave T, great idea..

Clyde come join us trolls down in the theory area, where we have great discussions which will be sure to test your brain cells....

DaveT, as a side note, some guys are timid when asking questions on the board here. Some feel intimidated by the knowledge of the crew here. Hense the reference to the email. I figure I could ease him in.

Clyde, we get you down there, we ain't leaving you go, be forewarned...we have twisted humor..

Wow. I really appreciate all of your help! Sounds like I have stumbled into the right place. I've never really checked out the theory forum yet. But I sure will now!

Thanks again.
