We'd like to get a thread going with some pictures of Holiday Lighting that we run across.
I know we all see some real nice displays this time of year.
Text with how they were done, or any special "twists" would also be welcome.

How about it? What better place than ECN for a collection like this?

Please email any to me at
electure@sbcglobal.net
and I'll put them up, or you can send them to
webmaster@electrical-contractor.net

Thanks [Linked Image]

dougwells found this, it's way cool [Linked Image]

Unfortunately, it will probably only work with high speed internet connections and Windows Media Player

Holy Crap is right. That house would definitely make the evening news. Very cool.
Posted By: e57 Re: Holiday Lighting Pictures - 11/22/05 07:49 AM
I played it again... It has music!

WOW!!
Watching that display almost sent me into a seizure [Linked Image].

It would be interesting to see what kind of control system they use.

I'm afraid that a lot of people will probably scale down outdoor decorating this year because of the increase in POCO rates.

That was way cool!! although I can only imagine the myraid of extension cords that house is draped in right now [Linked Image]

As Mike said, I'm curious as well as to what they're using for lighting controls to pull that off.... I'm not sure what would be used for something on that large of scale
Posted By: mamills Re: Holiday Lighting Pictures - 11/22/05 05:08 PM
I wouldn't be a bit surprised if there was a computer involved somehow.

Randy's right...the wiring must really be something!

Its a wee bit early isn't it [Linked Image]?
I will get you some of mine up when it switches on in early Decemeber, I've already used 500m of cable connecting it all up.

That house is truly spectacular, that has to be computer controlled, can we get some more information on this? I would love to send my admiration to the creator, that is unbelievable.

I'd hate to see the traffic in that nieghborhood.

I’ll have to get pictures of my cousins Christmas display. It’s completely computer controlled with a system from www.animatedlighting.com Totally sync to music via speakers in the yard and low power FM transmitter. Was pulling almost 300 amps when I put a meter on it last year. I’ll get full details.
Posted By: Jps1006 Re: Holiday Lighting Pictures - 11/23/05 12:41 AM
I'm sure a computer is involved, but I have a hunch it was video editing. My wife's mac G5 could quite easily piece that together with the music. Still very creative though.

If you blow up the video at the very begining, it looks like shadows are jumping around with the different freeze frames.
Posted By: Out Of Phase Re: Holiday Lighting Pictures - 11/23/05 12:53 AM
Nah, no way is that edited, that is real, would love to find more info about the creater, anyone have a site for it yet?
Posted By: Out Of Phase Re: Holiday Lighting Pictures - 11/23/05 01:01 AM
300Amps, surely not? If its computer controled like that hardly anything is on at the same time so it should use less power.

In Reno there is a neighborhood that is known for its' holiday displays.

For several of these homes, it is necessary for the power company to bring in additional temporary service drops. 200 and 400 amp drops are not unusual.

As you might guess, traffic is a mess.

I hope this year to go there during the day, and get some pics of these monster displays.

Reno: I'd be interested in seeing what some of the temp services look like, too.

A favorite holiday lighting link of mine is

This One

This young guy learned some safety tips from ECN members a few years back.
A great display, and a very nice website.

BTW, Also, check out his links to other websites and displays.

Here is the history of the Wizards of Winter http://www.wonderlandchristmas.com/wizardsofwinter.php

The "Wizards in Winter" display is currently the #1 topic on Snopes (absolutely the best urban legend debunking site):
http://www.snopes.com/photos/arts/xmaslights.asp

From the article:

Quote
This display was the work of Carson Williams of Mason, Ohio, who spent about three hours sequencing the 88 Light-O-Rama channels that control the 16,000 Christmas lights in his 2004 holiday lighting spectacular. The musical accompaniment is broadcast over a low-power radio station so that it is only audible to visitors tuned in to the correct frquency and doesn't disturb the neighbors.

Mr. Williams has made the lighting sequencer file and instructions available to anyone who wants to recreate this scene. See the link Doug provided just above. The actual sequencer file has a new home:

http://www.lightorama.com/downloads/Wizards.lms

And the Light-O-Rama controllers are here:

Merry Christmas to all!

Here are some pictures of a house in England, I've had to take 4 pictures to get it all in.
The display isn't finished yet, Plans already in for next year (2006)
include a computer controlled light synced to sound display, can't give you a figure on the number of bulbs, was never counted.

Here's a follow up on that house has the music and dancing lights http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,178023,00.html

I do stand corrected. I thought it had to be a computer generated display.

I'm afraid we can't come anywhere near to competing with those displays around here!

These are about the best I could find on a quick drive around the area on the way back from the supermarket:

Back to the music for a moment. I wouldda bet money it was Metallica playing one of their gigs with a full orchestra. I need to look into this Trans-Siberian Orchestra. They're supposed to have a web site at www.trans-siberian.com (haven't been there yet).

On a down note, the Snoops article has been updated with news that the guy has agreed to discontinue his show this year because there was a traffic accident in the neighborhood on 12/6/05 which was caused by the heavy traffic conjestion.
