Has anyone heard just what happened/cause at the Scout Jamboree in Virgina?

I want to say that my heart and prayers go out to the families that lost loved ones and to those that were injured.

I also want to know just what went wrong that 4 died and several others were injured in what is being called an "electrical" accident.

I have not been able to get much off the news so far.

Perhaps it is too early in the investigation to get any real news.

Sad to say that it was reported on my local news tonite that the leaders were involved in setting some tent poles which contacted overhead power lines. No voltage range was specified, and I would guess that it was some kind of large, metal-poled canopy tent rather than a "tent".

My condolences to the families of the victims and all those were unfortunate to have witnessed this event.

I couldn't believe it when I heard that on the radio last night.

I was trying to figure out....how tall was that tent pole that it managed to brush up against a power line?

Yikes. Condolences to the survivors and I hope the injured are back on their feet soon.

On our local news, a picture of the site was shown. The pole was the center pole of a very large tent, that was to be used as a dining area. It projected through the top of the tent, and was at least 15' tall. It looked like they didn't pay attention to where they were setting the tent, (directly below the lines) and the pole was most likely being placed from inside the tent, where no one could see where it was going.

A valuable but very costly lesson was learned.

I'm also a counselor for the Electricity,Electronics,and Radio Merit Badges for my troop. I always emphasize electrical safety when I conduct merit badge sessions and when I demo.Amateur Radio for the scouts and will be stepping up efforts in this training.
As a scout leader, I would like to put a call to all of the fine professionals on E.C.N. that if any of you are approached by the Scouts for electrical safety training or demonstration, please consider it and if any of you are Scout leaders, please offer your expertise in assisting them. This would be especially for anyone working for a Poco. as well.
