I wired a house a few months ago,and the plans and the builder told me to wire for a 120v jacuzzi in the master bathroom. Now when I get there to trim out the house it is a 240v 20 amp jacuzzi. I only have 12/2 with ground ran to it, and there is no way to pull 12/3 with ground to it because it is a 2 story house. The jacuzzi j-box only has 2 hots and a gound coming out of it. So if I install a 2 pole GFI breaker I have no neutral for the breaker. Will it work with out the neutral tied in to the breaker, and only the neutral pigtail tied into the neutral bar???
Yes, it will work. If you had a neutral, there would be nowhere to connect it at the tub. This is very common on 50 amp Hot Tubs.
It will work just fine. If your application has no neutral to attach to then the breaker will look for inbalances between the two phase conductors and will trip if that inbalance is too great, since the only other place the current would have to go to is ground. There is probably more involved than that, but that's the basic workings on a straight two pole no neutral GFI.
Texassparky, was there so delay on putting the tub in place? Normally all the tubs are installed at the time of rough in. This would have saved you so gref. But luck for you it isn't a big deal because it will still work fine. Good luck with your trim out.
The only reason 2-pole GFCI breakers have the neutral fed through them is so any neutral current (aka imbalance current) is combined with the two hot wires' currents, to mathematically equal 0.
If you have no neutral, and thus no neutral current, the device will still function normally.
Bert66, Most of the houses I do around here the jacuzzi get set on the trim out. Because they would get damaged if installed before then. They only set the regular tub on roughs. This tub probably cost big $$$$ from the looks of it. It has fiber optic light,heater etc.
