Iam wiring 5 apartment units, each unit having 60 amp panel, what is the the total service that I will need to have. wire size? amps size , thanks

With the limited info given it would have to be 300 amps.

However I would bet that is way oversize.

The only way to give an accurate answer to this question would be to know the total calculated load.

Richard, use article 220 to figure this out for yourself, then post you figures here.

With a question like that you wouldn't be wiring my apartment building.

My point is this: Everyone has their limitations. An electrician who has done commercial work for their whole career might be baffled by residential. Likewise, someone who only wires homes will probably have a hard time with a motor starter.

Isn't this the same question you asked under
your post "amps"? Its hard to believe you would be installing only a 60 amp panel. I would think the min would be 100 amps.

230.79(C) restricts the minimum rating of 100 amps for each dwelling.

With an AC load of 40 amps for each unit, I'd say 400amp to 600amp depending on sq ft of each.

You need a public meter for general areas.

Shortcircuit, the 100 amp mininmum would only apply to a One-Family Dwellingsee definition of Dwelling, One-Family in article 100.

Richard, why don't you attempt to do the math and let us see what you come up with?

Peter has a good point, this seems to be out of your expertise.
