Does anyone know the standard for installing an emergency shut off at fuel pumps. I'm not talking about a gas station. This is at my work (stone quarry- per MSHA regulations). I need to install one at our fuel pumps to meet our safety department requirements. I have never installed any hazarous location equipment, so I'm not up on the standards.

Also any information on how this is typically done in a simple way. We have two pumps that need to simultaneously shut down on contact.

I've seen it done many ways but a 3 pole relay interupting the sub panel feeding the pumps works well. Making sure you interupt all conductors but grounding conductor. In your case assuming they are running off 110v you could get 2 normally closed 2 pole relays and use a panic button to open them. Mount the equipment in an area that isn't hazardous. Their is a standard on the panic button, has to be so many feet from but not exceed ??

The reference for the emergency stop button is 514.11(C) 2002 NEC. More than 20 feet and less than 100 feet from the despensers.

I work around mines & quarries on occaision & my advice to you is to ask your Federal MSHA inspector for advice. After all, if you get this wrong, he's the one who will cite your company.

I've found most MSHA inspectors to be very knowledgeable about Federal mining laws, to the point that if they cite you, you will likely lose on appeal. They are, however, very weak on the NEC, so try to comply with their requirements first, then comply with the NEC.
