I am looking for information on becoming a union journeyman in new jersey. I have been in the field non union for some time now, with several years schooling behind me also. I am considering going union and need to know how it works. Must i wait for a test date, or can i call my local hall. Any info on this topic would be great. thanks
Stickman,
This thread will probably be close because this subject usually blows up. Feel free to contact me via e-mail. My advise......call the hall. They are the only ones that can help you and they will be glad to see you.
PS. I don't know where in NJ you are but this should help.

In northern IL, the only thing an Electrician / EC license gets you with the IBEW is the ability to skip the first part of the apprenticeship selection process.
I think the only "fast" way in is if you're at a shop that goes union while you're working there.
A few years ago (during a construction boom) I heard a rumor that they were "fast tracking" indie EC's and wire monkeys into journeyman status with the local, but I never found anybody who could really confirm it.
Stickman,
Welcome to ECN.
As Nick says, we try to avoid issues that could easily ignite and come between even the best of friends.
I encourage anyone that would like to offer information to send Stickman an email.
