Other than covering conduit in drywall is there any way or cables to give you two hour fire protection besides m.i.c.c.

Didn't even know conduit had a fire rating.
What is the application?

If it's for something like a fuel farm (pumping station) you probably could not do better than MI, all in all, it does not come out a lot more than Rigid if you're running a bunch of it.

Walls are fire rated, the individual components inside them are dependent upon them to provide the rating. Many applications you do want to insure a low smoke in case of fire.

If it's for Fire Pump or Emg. Cicuits VitaLink makes a 2 hr. mc cable. Check www.vitalinkcable.com

ITS FOR A COMMERCIAL FIRE ALARM INSTALLATION

I'm still confused. Why would a supervised Fire Alarm system need a two hour rating?

In the case of a fire, the system (hopefully) would have performed it's function in the vicinity of the fire, and any damage to the system wiring would be a moot point. [Linked Image]

If you are looking for 2 hour rated fire alarm cable as described in 760.31(F), or http://www.ecmweb.com/ar/electric_ci_cable_2/ then check http://www.drakacomtequsa.com/lifeline/default.htm http://www.vitalinkcable.com/ http://www.tycothermal.com/northame...ts.asp?can=1013&pt=prod&pdid=796
Thanks for checking the spec, I've been specifying this cable for interconnection between the control panel and each notification zone for about a year now, and I have to struggle with the installer each time. [Linked Image]

That is the only place I have ever seen MI cable installed. Feeding a disconnect for a huge fire alarm panel in a shopping mall we used to service. It also fed the 480v., 100HP motor for the booster pump for the system.
Before that I never even knew what the stuff was.
Why not just use the MI?

The reason i don,t want to use m.i.is cost,if i can achieve the same result at less cost why not.

You can't buy MI cable in a fire alarm rated configuration.
Posted By: GETELECTRIC Re: M.I. CABLES - 11/10/03 05:26 PM
you can buy m.i. cable in a fire alarm rated configuration 18/2/, 18/2 shielded etc.

I just checked my favorite MI cable manufacturer and you are correct, sorry for the misleading info.
I still would go with the other products on my previous post, as they are easier to work with. http://www.tycothermal.com/northame...ts.asp?can=1013&pt=prod&pdid=285

Saw one cable called firewire? (No, not the Ethernet stuff) - this had a red outer insulating sheath, and carried a fire rating. My buddy used it when hard-wiring the rate-of-rise detector in my basement.

When I get home, I'll try and find some scraps, and I'll get product info up ASAP.

I am doing a job now that is spec. MI cable from the generator to the fire pump. It's a 200ft run and the MI cable will leave the building through a conduit nipple filled with fire rated caulking and be direct buried to the gen. pad where it enters the generator. The job is speced like this but. I am looking for different options on doing this to present to the owner.
