Can you legally install a dimmer on a half/hot wall receptacle? Code Section?
Maybe your in a diffrent book. There is no 404-14 in the 1999 NEC
It's in the 2002 code with a new/changed mark beside it.
404.14 (E) Dimmer switches. General-use dimmer switches shall be used only to control permanently installed incandescent luminaires (lighting fixtures) unless listed for the control of other loads and installed accordingly.
I understand the reasons for this restriction.
Is there any way around this using non-standard recepticals a la the UK's use of old standard BS 2A or 5A sockets for switched/dimmed table/bed-side lighting instead of standard 13A ones? Can non NEMA recepticals and plugs be used in the US, or must everything be explicitly 'listed' for use?
Thanks for the help. At least now I can confirm the conflict I was having is valid. A customer recently asked me to do this( not the first time) and I said no( as usual). Until now I could not find anything on the subject in the code book (1999) but knew it sounded like a bad idea. Its great to know there's a place to go for help......SO (humbly) THANKS EVERYONE
