I just took a two day safety class and my head is reeling with all of the safety requirements we are suppossed to be following. The main issue that I never really thought much about before, is that if I am ever working anything hot, I need to have the appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) on.

This means, if I need to take the panel cover off to check a voltage, I first need to determine the potential flash boundary, and then I need to don the proper attire, which most often will require hot gloves, fire resistant clothing, and hard hat (or hood) with face shield.

I've never seen this done. I want to know if anyone out there is doing this and what are your feelings about the matter.

Thanks

One company I work for requires full arc flash PPE --- we have a matrix sheet detailing the PPE at different voltages, etc. Not wearing it is grounds for immediate dismissal.

Another employer I work for does nothing.

I had NEMA a size 4 starter explode in front of me many years ago. The PPE is a pain in the @$$, but it would have saved me a month of picking plastic out of my skin -- I was lucky I wasn't burned/killed.

It will take some getting used to, but I don't see any way of not using it. OSHA can cite you for not using/supplying it.

So who are the suppliers of this stuff. I would like to get at least a rudimentary arc/flash kit, the gloves and shield and stuff.

Thanks I'll bounce that off of the powers that be on Monday, and see how far I get.
