Where can I post questions about Business issues? (If this is the place here goes) I'm told it now takes about a year to get your C-10 in CA from the time the application is turned in. Six months plus to get the test scheduled and three months plus to get your license. Does anyone know a shortcut?
Also, regarding liability insurance, the shop I work for now bought back our office from the mothership in Houston. Our insurance went up over one million dollars supposedly because we weren't based out of Texas anymore. Can a corporation be set up in another state for insurance purposes?

First of all welcome to the board.

I will admit that I am no business man, but I know that a lot of business are incorporated in Deleware. I have no idea why, just passing along some information.

It should not take a year, and does not take 6 months to get a test date, more like 6 WEEKS...be sure to turn in ALL supporting documents and comlete the application (with no mistakes!). If the CLSB has to return you application it will delay the process.

Ton speed up the process (if you qualify) - The examination requirement is waived if the qualifying individual meets the following conditions:

The person is currently the qualifying individual for a license in good standing in the same classification for which he or she is applying; or

The person has been a qualifying individual within the past five years for a license in good standing in the same classification for which he or she is applying; or

Within the last five years, the person has passed both the Law and Business examination and the trade examination in the same classification for which he or she is applying.

I am baseing the 6 month schedule on the Test Taking School I have signed up with, they say it is taking 6 months so I hope you are correct and they are wrong.
Regarding my question of having my office out of state, the reason for this would be to have a different basis for insurance. I realize I can have an out of state presence, I was wondering if anyone has successfully done this.

I dont believe your business has to be in CA.

for example: A Texas contractor may be awarded a job in CA, this does not mean they have to open an office in CA, they can apply for a license no matter where in the US they are located.

if you do a license search at www.cslb.ca.gov you will see many contractors do not have a california address.
