Just wondering what some of you charge for a service call? As a standard I usually charge a $40 trip/diagnosis charge and $45 per hr. So a minimun charge would be $62.50 (half hr minimun service call). But, depending on the situation I will frequently charge less.

$75.00 including 1st hour labor.
Sometimes adjusted downward according to attitude and/or economic situation.

Estimates are Free. $85 minimum service call will get a trouble shoot and generally the repair on most t-shoots or up to one hour. Most items we try to flat rate price.

With free estimates do you end up with alot of window shoppers and if you do how do you compensate for it? If not how do you manage to aviod them? BTW I use an $80 minimun for up to one hour and $40 per man hour after.

Re: Free Estimates

Most of our work comes from referral, so the customers are kind of pre-qualified. We estimate most small stuff over the phone or give them a range over the phone to be firmed up when the crew arrives. If we do have to go look at the job first, the job will usually be large enough to justify it. We get most of the jobs we bid(70%+) and the few we don't get are usually customers we don't want.

The Tv Antenna Guy Gets $150 for his service call 2 wire man.
The HVAC Guy gets $129 for his calls
The Phone Company another 2 wire guy gets 91.00 for the first half hour and $46.00 for each additional half hour. Check this out just look in the pnone book. The electrician gets what is left. I noticed these 1970 service call charges. Check your overhead expenses and add 30% plus your direct labor and then put in some profit figure, you may find a good call rate.

i charge $45 per hour with a 2 hour minimum, plus a $20 trip charge, for service calls.
i do not give "free estimates." when someone asks for one, i'll tell them, (over the phone),its going to run somewhere between $110, (the minimum) and $1,000,000. if they are serious about wanting a price, they'll usually pay my rate to come out and give them a good, accurate estimate. most of the time, the "free estimate" callers, are either wanting someone to show them how to "DIY" the job, or are using your numbers as bargaining power for their "wife's brother's old army buddy".
