can he do this????... new home being built by a homeowner in an old subdivision

weatherhead is 3 feet above the back of the house, using 2-1/2" sch 40 PVC from weatherhead down through overhang, down 2 stories on the siding, then about 60 feet to the front along the side of the house maybe knee high off the ground... isnt there an ugly clause in 110 somewhere?

mast risers are usually RMC, subject to the poco's specs , otherwise it's common to have an OH service in pvc...
Posted By: Redsy Re: new home service - 10/25/02 11:27 AM
Is the PVC actually supporting the utility service drop?
If so 230.28 requires it be of "adequate strength". I doubt an inspector would approve of PVC. Also, the PoCo probably requires a minimum of 2" RMC.
Regarding the "ugly clause"... see 110.12

Just when I think I might have heard/seen it all! [Linked Image]

A PVC mast!!! [Linked Image]

Must be Southern California, PVC mast will flex during seismic activity, there by preventing damage to the poco's service drop!!

About the ugly clause, if he doesn't guy off the 3' of PVC mast, it should develop a very nice bend at the roof line.

Hold on, maybe the PVC service pipe is not a mast. Then it might not be a violation. Right? Plus the point of attachment could be connected below the head (and on the house) and this would be a legal service. As for the height of the PoCo meter, that might be a PoCo requirement. Around here the PoCo want's 4-5 feet to the center of the meter. Unless it is on a driveway, then they want it as high as possible with 6'6" MAX to the top of the meter pan.

here's the pictures...... click on the picture to link to it's larger image, each linked photo should take about 20 seconds with a 56/modem, only ~2 seconds on mine

<IMG SRC=\"http://g0atnet.com/misc_images/cw/image001_small.gif\">
he cut the pvc in half top to bottom, longitudinally, maybe didnt fit???

<IMG SRC=\"http://g0atnet.com/misc_images/cw/image002_small.gif\">
here's the other side of the vertically cut pvc, and i wonder if the utility will go for the short sweep elbows

<IMG SRC=\"http://g0atnet.com/misc_images/cw/image003_small.gif\">
he used a flush mount so had to cut into the siding, and then bent the base outward, and i think the trim is the only thing over the flanges, there's not enough space for the edge flanges to be under the siding

<IMG SRC=\"http://g0atnet.com/misc_images/cw/image004_small.gif\">
it's all schedule 40 with straps anywhere from 3 feet to 10 feet apart

here's the rest....

<IMG SRC=\"http://g0atnet.com/misc_images/cw/image006_small.gif\">
this is one of the nicest pvc-imc connections i've ever seen...... i didn't make any of this up..... thought you'd have to see it to believe it

<IMG SRC=\"http://g0atnet.com/misc_images/cw/image007_small.gif\">
last week it had a weatherhead and pvc, this week it was a length of imc and no weatherhead

<IMG SRC=\"http://g0atnet.com/misc_images/cw/image008_small.gif\">
this pic shows some overspans on his pvc supports

<IMG SRC=\"http://g0atnet.com/misc_images/cw/image009_small.gif\">
i guess i dont have a problem with the schedule 40 here, because there isnt room for large vehicles to damage it??

That's one ugly installation! I love the PVC to IMC conversion! Did the building department and utility approve this installation?
Posted By: Cindy Re: new home service - 10/30/02 04:49 AM
theres nothing connected to the utility lines yet and i doubt that there will be for awhile, he keeps changing things.......
he probably is getting advice from his plumber or roofer or maybe a brother in law over the telephone

It seems like there is a common theme among all the installations that we cackle and guffaw over....

Wouldn't it have been simpler, and cheaper, to have done the job right in the first place?

silly me, there I go thinking again. sorry

That's one ugly (non compliant) install.

If that were my neighbor I would be raising hell.

Ripping the pvc lengthwise is cute.

No expansion fitting either.

Cindy -- How did you do those cool thumbnail links?
Posted By: Cindy Re: new home service - 10/31/02 03:11 AM
"How did you do those cool thumbnail links?"

hmmmm... thats a long story...[thinking... hmmmm, how to say this in a few words]....
you probably know most of this already....
ok this is simplified somewhat......

first you put your pix[photos] on a web site somewhere in cyberspace[i use my own server(set up in my place) so dont really have any suggestions, i hear yahoo and geocities have free space, but they are too busy and probably wouldnt work too well cause your link would try to access their storage space to get your pix and it would be too busy and it would just show up as an empty box with an "x" in it, maybe],

then after your pix are stored in cyberspace at [example]YourPixSite.com, then you just have to use ECN's UBB codes(see the UBB link to the left of this text box) to make the connection, here i've used one UBB code inside another UBB code, that is, the IMAGE code [img] is inside the URL-HYPERLINKING [URL] code... like this......

[note i had to change some brackets and stuff below so it wouldnt think i am trying to link to something with this example]

{URL=http://InsertYourPixSiteHere.com/misc_images/cw/image001.jpg} {IMG} {URL=http://InsertYourPixSiteHere.com/misc_images/cw/image001_small.gif}h++p://InsertYourPixSiteHere.com/misc_images/cw/image001_small.gif{/URL} {/IMG} {/URL}

you see 2 pix above in my example, one is the small gif thumbnail photo(i reduced the gif pix to 150pixel-width to load faster here) surrounded by the two [IMG] codes(tags) and the other is the large jpg photo(i reduced my jpg photos to 800pixel-width so they would fit on most screens) which it links to.

there...... i think i said it right??? its totally easier to show someone in person than to say it on a keyboard [Linked Image]

[Linked Image from g0atnet.com]

this ufer connection was inside this house. there's a ufer tag directly between the rebar and clamp so theres no contact at all, and it is loose because he didnt turn the back side of the clamp over to fit the #4 rebar, and it needs a mud ring for access after drywall.
i also have pix of trusses he drilled in the garage... i wasnt invited so never got past the garage, but bet there was good photo-ops inside too.
