What is the best way to do kick bends (offsets) when entering a box using 1/2 pvc pipe.I saw a job today where none were used and it just didn't look right.I always use ridged and emt in the plants so i was just wondering if someone could explain?

We use a hot box, and/or a heat blanket for pvc bends. Also, Carlon has offsets listed in their catalog that work; and they are definitely quicker!

In the field I use a mapp torch. It takes a while to get use to it and not to scorch the pipe. I also use a heat gun, like you use on shrink wrap. This should work well for you without the expense of a heat blanket.

Frank, I have found that strapping the PVC at a reasonable distance from the box or condulet then heating the pipe with a heat gun will let the PVC form itself. Seems to always work for me.

They make offset nipples for PVC. Though they probably wouldn't look too neat with a coupling on one end and a connector on the other.

I was in a code class a couple of years ago with a UL rep - using a torch is definitely a NO for bending PVC....and I'm under the impression that heat guns are also on the 'out' list. Does anyone know a source for a definitive answer on this?

For 1/2" pvc I always used a 3/4 bender for putting little kicks or offsets. How does that sound? You just have to go a little past where you want to go because it will come back a bit.

I use a 500 watt halogen light lay the pipe in front of the light for about a minute and bend away.
