I received two e-mails with attachments today tiled "electrical proposals." In the message it asked something to the effect of " hi how are you? I send this asking your advise."
Wasn't this a virus that was going around a while back? Is it back?
The attachment was a .PIF file. I did not open it

Nick,

Yes, it does sound like the one Bill had warned us about.

Go here for the original thread.

Looks like you've dodged a bullet...

Smart 'puterin' (self, take note!)

Nick,

Looks like it's still milling around cyberspace!

I don't recal the name of that WORM - maybe someone else does.

It pops in my Inbox once in a while [along with tons of Spam!].

Welcome back Scott!

Nick,

Great to be back again!!! Hope to get back into the game ASAP and stay around for a while [Linked Image]

I remember that WORM's name - it's the Sircam32 WORM. Seems that it was Sircam32[and something else] WORM.

What a pain in the butt that thing was! Steve ["Sparky"] was the first poor "Abusee" of that WORM.

Other than being a general nuisance and an E-Mail Server bottle neck generator [new tech term!], I seem to have read it did contain some malicious scripts with a triggor date falling around September or November.

Yes, it's still around! [Linked Image]
I've gotten about a half dozen of them today alone. [Linked Image]

the W32/SirCam@MM is what mine are called.
Luckily our mail server scans all emails going through it so it never gets to my computer. [Linked Image]

The secret is to cut and paste the first line, and then put the information in between the brackets on each end.

Now I need help! I receive about 15 emails every day in a foreign language, I think it is Korean?

I send them to the junk pile. Is there any way I can tell my email to avoid this waste of time!

Joe, there are a couple of ways to deal with unwanted email:

1) If you're on a service that offers 'blocking' (like hotmail.com) you can open the message and click "Block" which then gives you the option of blocking only that specific sender or blocking all senders from that domain (the blahblahblah.com part).

2) If you're on a 'local' type of ISP (internet service provider) you can forward a copy of the unwanted email, preferably with expanded address information, to your own ISP (usually abuse@yourisp.com or help@yourisp.com) and request that they block them from your account through the server.

If you're on something like netscape.net that has no option for blocking and no &*@#%!^ help address (thank you very much, aol & netscape), you are pretty much on your own for dealing with the spammers.

I would suggest that you create an email address with an 'odd' character in it, such as a "+" symbol if possible so the spammers who are soooooooooo creative and use common names (joesmith@aol.com, joesmith@hotmail.com, etc) don't end up sending you junk, too.

BuggabooBren:

Thanks for the advice! I have Earthlink and I can send the "junk to the junk pile" and they also have a spaminator that picks up quite a few junk mail messages.
