The 2005 NEC has finally deleted all references to a Design E motor.

If I buy a high efficiency motor required by the model energy codes, (ASHRAE 90.1) what design series will I expect to get?

The Design E motor was deleted from the NEC because they never existed. They were planned but none were ever made.

Thanks. I was aware of that. Are any energy efficient motors available?

I believe all of the manufacturer's have "premium" efficiency motors that meet the energy standards. I think that the normal motor is about 90 to 92% efficient and the "premiums" can be about 95%. It doesn't sound like much, but over the life of the motor it can make a big difference in energy costs. Of the total cost of a motor over its life, about 97% is the energy cost to operate the motor.
