The 1996 code changed the strapping requirement for conduits, IMC,RD,EMT.
The code allows the conduits to be supported by the framing members, but are not required to be rigidly supported, except at the boxes.
Our inspector says the handbook picture shows the conduit in a bar joist, in the "V" of the bar joist so the conduit cannot move. I said that is a good installation but that the code does not require that the conduit be place so it will not move. The exception is the strapping at the boxes or temination point.
What is your interpretaion?

358.30 2002 refers to Securing And supporting. 358.30 b again refers to Securly Fastened.Hand book refers to 342.30b (4)in handbook for Commentary. I;d say can be run any area in bar joists but must be straped per code requirements.
