Hi,
Is it a code violation ( i hate the word illegal) to install a light fixture against combustible materials?

I mean can you just pull out a light fixture and bug it on to a romex sticking through the material and secure it with screws directly to the material? Wire nuts between the fixture and the material.

I myself have never done this but I see it a lot.

As far as I know the only time a JBOX COVER does not require SCREWS, CLAMPS is when it weighs more than 100LBS or is threaded. So there is no JBOX that does not have a cover. This in my opinion would include a JBOX built into a light fixture.

You would not take a porcelain fixture and secure it to the surface with just screws.

I saw a post on here where it was recommended.

Regards

Greg

A box is required unless the instructions with the fixture with it say it can be installed without one.

Not only is a box required as stated above, but 410.13 requires that the combustible material be covered between the edge of the fixture canopy and the outlet box..

Few things are harder to put up with than the annoyance of a good example.
