Wiring a detached garage. UNtil now I didn`t realize they were going to leave studs open un finished I set boxes out 1/2 inch for sheet rock will this fly for inspection I`m planning on calling tommorrow. Just wanted a heads up. I used plactic boxes nm cable stapled as normal. Hope I don`t have to rip it out.

I've seen this go both ways. Some inspectors will maintain that your wiring method is for consealed wiring. The boxes you've used are for consealed wiring. The code allows NM cable for consealed and exposed installation (334.10(A). The issue could be physical protection [Linked Image]. Some inspectors don't approve horizontal NM cable in wall studs because of potential storage of things and hanging of things on the cable. That same inspector will allow NM cable in the floor joist in the basement. Must be a double standard. Naw, Inspectors don't have double standards.

I am with George here, the only real hazard I see is if your <exposed> NM doesn't "closely follow the building finish". The box sticking out may be ugly but it is not a violation. When your customer's wife does talk him into finishing the room it may actually prevent a hazard.
