Could someone point out where else other than 300.21 does the code require pads on the back of steel boxes in a common rated fire wall between two seperate apts?
Thanks much-dave

Hi Dave. Take a look at the fine print note (FPN) under 300.21, and you will notice that it is mainly a building code and UL issue.

Dave, as Ryan says, fire stopping and rated assemblies are outside the NEC.

There may be situations where pads may not be an approved assembly method between dwelling units.

You need to know the rating of the wall which should be information provided by the Architect.

If it is a fire wall, you cannot have a opening within the same interstitial space. That is from the BOCA code, and the IBC.

If it means anything to you, we used tons of 'em at the Pentagon..... a building with a known fire problem.

If you need, reply here and I can provide a reference at work tomorrow.
