On a standard free standing electric range that calls for a 40 amp ckt., I have been using #6 Copper NM Cable.
Does anyone use #8?

If I know that the range is rated at 40 amps, and the run is not too long, I use 8 AWG NM or AC cable. It is rated for 40 amps in the 60 degree celcius column as required in Article 334.

As i rarely get any appliance specs beforehand, (other than location) i usually go with #6

I never get any specs either. I'm lucky if I know which side of the kitchen it's on.

I pull #6.

Any range that is 12kw or less only needs a branch circuit of 8kw = 33.3 amps at 240v . This can be found in note 4 on the range table 220.19

Been there. Had to move it too when they change their mind. [Linked Image]
