can anyone tell me if they think that a rec. installed for a dishwasher that has a cord can be installed behind the appliance.would this be an accessible location?

We allways just run the cord to the sink cabnet next to the dishwasher.

During rough we put a box in the sink base wall with a few extentions on it to get thru the drywall and cabnet. Then we can wip off the extension for a disposial, air switch hot/cold water dispencer, and or dishwasher. Then it is covered with a switch garvin for the dishwasher disconect. If the dishwasher has a plug then we use a single receptical garvin so the plug is the disconect.

The nice thing about this way is you can easily addapt to what ever they give you or add at the end.

my problem is that the dw is not next to the sink base. there is a corner cabinet next to it and the sink base is on a penninsula.

(1999) 422-16(b)(2)(d) "The receptacle shall be located in the space occupied by the appliance or adjacent thereto."

Dishwashers are considered 'accessible' since you can remove 2 screws and pull them out of the cabinet space.

422-16(b)(2)lists 5 conditions that have to be met where built-in dishwashers are cord- and plug-connected (a,b,c,d, & e).

i would consider it accessible to, but my local inspector thinks that if you have to disco the water line to the dw to remove it,that its no longer accessible

I think if a Dishwasher is installed right it should be able to be pulled out of the cabinet without disconnecting anything.

JMC tell the inspector to read the code article. It is clear the receptacle can be behind the dishwasher. There is no mention of water lines.

I agree with both Dave and Scott. The NEC is quite clear in 422.16(B)(2)
