Can anybody tell me why a convenience outlet is required for an above ground pool? It doesn't make any sense to me.

Welcome to the forum.

The requirement for the receptacle is there so that when Henry Homeowner wants to plug in some utilization equipment near the pool he will have access to a properly installed GFI protected receptacle & he won't need to run an extension cord to a receptacle further away that may not be GFI protected.

Mike,
The code making panel assumes that portable electric devices like radios, stereos, ect. will be used in the pool area. By requiring a GFCI protected receptacle close by, it is likely that this GFCI protected receptacle would be used to power any devices used near the pool. If this receptacle was not required, then cords would be run from other outlets that may not be GFCI protected.

Thanks for the responses and they make sense. However, I built my house 5 years ago and I have a GFI outlet located on my house which happens to be 22 feet away from the waters edge. I spoke to my code official yesterday and he says that whoever inspects it might allow it if he's in a good mood. If not, I guess I'll fail and have to run another outlet. I think the codes need a little updating. Thanks again for responding.

Mike,
Why does it need updating? You have to draw the line somewhere.

Mike,

If you feel strongly about this issue, you should submit a proposal to change the NEC. After all, it is our code and is open for input from any source. Forms for submitting a proposal can be found in the back of your codebook.

Good luck.

If I were inspecting this job and the receptacle is 22 feet away, and in good shape, and on somethig solid (like a house) I would pass this job. I had a job like this several years ago. The inspector say an outlet solidly attached to a house but it was 21 feet away from the new hot tub in the back yard. So he made me move the outlet off the house, down under a side walk, more into the middle of the yard,(where it can get hit by a lawnmower, or people can trip over it.)on a rocket post so that the new receptacle was 19-18 feet away from the spa. Is this logical? I don't think so.
