Is it legal to have a 20a 120v single recepticle outdoor "not GFI protected", for a spa if the spa has its own GFI built into the plug? Does the recept have to be 5 feet away from the spa?

Al,
If the Receptacle is outside it has to be GFCI protected period.

Thanks Bill, kinda what I was thinking, that makes sense. Would there be any problem with tripping by putting a GFI recept or breaker in since it would be double GFI protected? (The recept and the spa plug both having a GFI on the same 2a ckt).

I haven't encountered any problems with double GFCI protection like this. These Tubs have been coming with GFI protection in the control panels and some on the cords for years. Look at Hairdryers for a similar situation. Many come with a built-in GFCI (or similar) and don't seem to cause any problems with the Bathroom GFCI.
