I have a project that had specified a sign lighter type fluorescent to wash the face of the upper half of a tilt wall bldg. Problem is, it is to be mounted on 4" steel tubing. In my proposal, I told them they would have to cut 176 opening for me to get the locknut on the knuckle nipple. They asked for an alternate. I (& the manuf. rep) have been unsuccessful .. am about to give the problem back, but thought I would check with you guys first. Low profile, no surface mounted pancake boxes or conduit - all fished through the steel channel.

Look in to eliptipar lighting. Very expensive stuff, but may do what you are looking for.

I really appreciate this. Have done a lot of searching. The Arch's are looking at it now and seem to like it. Hope they still do when they get a price.

If you're mounting it on top of the 4" post, this fixture might work:

Or are you mounting it to a railing or something that runs horizontally? It seems to me that any trunnion-mount fixture would work in that case. Everyone makes one - like this:

Drill and tap holes or through-bolt it to the railing to support it, connect it to power with liquid-tite (or cord in some jurisdictions) also via a threaded hole in the railing.
