I am a commercial/industrial electrician and
only do residential for friends and family.
My current brother in law project is changing
a 125A GE with THQP breakers to 200A. None of
the local distributors carry GE so I settled
on a Murray 200A that uses type MH breakers
because I was told the GE breakers could be
used in the Murray panel. I am very sceptical
about this and would never mix breakers in
the areas that I normally work. My question-
is this acceptable for residential? The old breakers are in good condition so I would
like to use them.

Here in NYC the GE and Murray apnels are iterchangeable, except for the GE slimline type breakers. In fact a lot of supply houses are only carrying one or the other to lighten their stock.
I believe that there was a buyout, but both lines will remain on the market to support the older products.

What is not acceptablt is to change only the panel without changing the meter pan and service entrance conductors to ones applicablt to the new amperage.

Stingray,

I think you're better off either getting new breakers for the Murray panel or getting a GE panel. If local suppliers haven't got one I'm sure you could find someone to ship it to you.

Silver, Hello to a fellow NYer!
Are you thinking of Crouse-Hinds?
I haven't heard of any connection between Murray and GE.
